Veterans Day

November 11th of each year is celebrated as Veterans Day, but what does that mean?  Why do we celebrate?  How should we celebrate?  What can we do to honor the veterans and their families?  Let's find out, shall we?

Fly her proud!

I am writing this just a few days after the 2016 election, which, in case you've been living under a rock, was the most divisive election in recent history.  It's important to remember that today is still Veterans Day and that has nothing to do with who you voted for or who won.

What is Veterans Day?

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, in November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

This day was chosen because the year prior, in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, there was a cessation of hostilities between the Allied forces and Germany.  Thus, it's considered the end of the war to end all wars.

How Can I Honor Those That Have Lost?

By saying thank you.  It's that simple.  Thank a Vet!  Thank their family!  See, more than half of the voters this week are angry and less than half are happy.  100% of them can complain and defend their choice.  Do you know why?  Freedom!  And why do we have freedom?  The veterans and their sacrifice.  So thank them!  You don't have to agree with the wars they fought to be grateful they were willing to fight them so you didn't have to and a thank you and a smile costs you nothing!  You should also fly your flag proudly in accordance with U.S. Code 36.

How Do I Celebrate?

There are thousands of Regional Events.  You can also visit a cemetery or battleground depending on your location, but if you want to go simple, take a hike or a walk, visit a beach or the mountains, have a barbecue.  Spend time with your loved ones enjoying this beautiful and FREE country we have.  Go work the day at a Veterans shelter.  Donate to a Veterans organization.  Smile.  Be free.  Be grateful.  Say thank you and mean it!  Listen to a war story!  Ask questions!  Be grateful.  Be grateful.

Be grateful.

Thank you to all the men and women and their families for being willing to die for my right to write this blog.  Thank you to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for my right to vote!  Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.
