I am an avid fan of Family Guy. I like most of what Seth MacFarlane does. I think he's a hoot. I also recognize that many people despise him. That being said, I think there are some episodes everyone should watch for a variety of reasons.
Here's my list of my must see episodes from one of the greatest animated shows on Fox that has aired 15 seasons and has been created by Seth MacFarlane. (Do you think that's enough qualifiers?) This list covers my favorites through season 13. I will add to it as I watch additional seasons.Season 1, episode 4: Mind Over Murder
Peter is sentenced to house arrest and decides to build a bar down in the basement which leads to hilarity.
Season 2, Episode 3: Da Boom
Y2K, Twinkies, and OctoStewie.
Season 3, Episode 20: Road to Europe
This episode marks the introduction of the Stewie/Brian Anthology Series and you and I both know the "Road to..." episodes are, by far, the best.
Season 3, Episode 22: When You Wish Upon a Weinstein
This is one of the more controversial episodes and definitely one of the funnier ones. It deals with Jewish stereotypes.
Season 4, Episode 14: PTV
"Freakin FCC", 'nuff said.
Season 5, Episode 9: Road to Rupert
Brian sells Rupert at a garage sale. Stewie, who is upset with Brian, takes him cross country to Colorado to find his beloved teddy, and ends up having a ski-off to win back Rupert.
Season 6, Episode 1: Blue Harvest
The first in the spoof Star Wars Trilogy. Seth took the concept that was very well done in Robot Chicken and perfected it. Even if you're not a Family Guy fan, I highly recommend the trilogy.
Season 6, Episode 4/5: Stewie Kills Lois/Lois Kills Stewie
A super fun double feature that cleverly stays out of canon but gives us some great what-if moments.
Season 7, Episode 3: Road to Germany
Another Stewie/Brian anthology that adds Mort into the mix with some hilarious historical and political commentary.
Season 7, Episode 11: Not All Dogs Go to Heaven
The entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation guest stars and hilarity ensues in an otherwise boring Meg episode.
Season 7, Episode 12: 420
"Bag of Weed" is probably one of the catchiest songs in the history of a show known for catchy songs.
Season 7, Episode 14: We Love You Conrad
A great story with some fantastic Star Trek references and Lauren Conrad spoofing herself as Brian's new girlfriend.
Season 8, Episode 1: Road to Multiverse
This is probably my favorite episode of all time. The only real flaw is the inconsistency in Brian and Stewie. Sometimes, they're observers and sometimes they're a part of the other universes.
Season 8, Episode 17: Brian & Stewie
Technically, this isn't an anthology episode but it does give us a deep look into both characters as they're trapped in a bank vault the entire episode.
Season 8, Episode 20: Something, Something Dark Side
The second of the Star Wars trilogy brings more awesome.
Season 8, Episode 21: Partial Terms of Endearment
Banned from television for being too controversial, the episode deals with abortion. It can finally be seen on Netflix and frankly, I don't know why it got banned. I think the Weinstein episode is far more controversial. It only makes this list because of the controversy.
Season 9, Episode 1: And Then There Were Fewer
A great take on the Agathie Christie classic that brings closure to the James Wood story-line...or does it?
Season 9, Episode 7: Road to the North Pole
This is one of my favorite Christmas Episodes of anything, ever. Catchy music and a great moral. Make it a Holiday tradition as I have.
Season 9, Episode 16: The Big Bang Theory
Finally, we get to see the consequences of Stewie's time-travel.
Season 9, Episode 18: Episode VI: It's a Trap
The inevitable conclusion to the fantastic Star Wars trilogy.
Season 10, Episode 5: Back to the Pilot
More great Stewie and Brian adventures with time travel and a return, hilariously, to the first Family Guy episode.
Season 11, Episode 21: Roads to Vegas
A fantastic addition to the Stewie/Brian anthology. I dare you not to laugh at the Pearly Gates scene.
Season 12, Episode 7: Into Harmony's Way
Following the lowest rated episode of the series (Episode 6: The Life of Brian), this one didn't fare much better but I think the songs from Peter and Quagmire are hilarious and worth the watch.
Season 13, Episode 1: The Simpsons Guy
This is the crossover we all waited for and finally got. It's on here for the nostalgia factor and has some funny parts but didn't meet my high expectations.
Season 14, Episode 20: Road to India
Not the best entry in the Stewie/Brian anthology, but a reasonable addition. Honestly, I enjoyed most of Season 14. I feel like Family Guy tackled a lot this season.
