As you might know, I used to be a travel agent. More importantly, I am a self-proclaimed Hawaii expert. This post is about must do activities on Oahu. Remember, I don't ever tell you about things I have not done and I never make money off these recommendations. If you have questions, leave me a comment!

Oahu, from Diamond Head |
The most important thing I can tell you about Oahu is that you should rent a car and get out of Honolulu/Waikiki. It's crowded and commercial and not very "Hawaii". Sure there are things to do there and some even make this list, but Oahu is so much more than high-rise condos and chain restaurants. While I am on the subject, check out
my dining spots on Oahu!

Diamond Head |
You absolutely must hike
Diamond Head. It's $5/car or $1/pedestrian and it offers views you won't believe. It happens to be one of the more popular hikes on the island so peak times are crazy crowded. Shoot for early morning or late afternoon. There's little shade so take water with you!

Pearl Harbor |
You absolutely MUST visit
Pearl Harbor EVERY TIME you go to Oahu. First, it's free. Second, you owe it to the
2400 men and women that died there. It is such a powerful place and I am touched every time I visit.

Byodo In Temple |
Another stop that won't break the bank is the historical
Byodo In Temple. For $3, you can explore the stunning grounds and meditate. You will also recognize it from shows like
LOST. Incidentally, a lot of my cool spots are from LOST. I did a self-planned, unguided LOST filming locations tour last time I was there.

Secret Beach |
If you find yourself wanting a tourist experience, head over to
Kualoa Ranch. Most of their stuff is overpriced and geared towards getting as many tourists through as possible. We did have a good time at their
Secret Island Beach. It is 2.5 hours and includes a boat ride, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, canoeing, snorkeling, volleyball, or just relaxing in a hammock. It's under $50/person but it's great if you want to try all those water sports without paying to rent the gear.
|
Dole Plantation |
Another tourist trap is
Dole Plantation. You need to do it once in your life and then just go back for the Dole Whips. You can tour the gardens, get lost in the world's largest maze, or ride the train. Each comes at a fee and all 3 will run you $22/person.
|
Shark's Cove |
On the North Shore, make sure to visit
Shark's Cove for protected snorkeling and tide pools and gorgeous views. Don't worry, there are no sharks here. It's free but parking can be an issue. Remember to stay within the cove and tide pools as the open ocean here can be very very dangerous.

A Secret Spot... |
Sure, you can head to
Turtle Beach if you want crowds and protesters, but you stand a good chance of spotting sea turtles everywhere in Oahu. One of my favorite spots happens to also be a LOST filming site. I call it Papailoa Beach but I am not sure what it's called. It is well hidden and never crowded.
Here's a link to how to find it. REMEMBER: Sea Turtles are a protected species. Touching them or disrupting them in any way is a federal offense. I know it looks cool, but I am actually about 10 feet behind the turtle here and the camera is about 15 in front of it. Don't be a dick.
Remember, there is a lot more to do on the island. If you want me to plan the perfect itinerary for you,
drop me an email. A small fee will apply.
