Superman Returns Review

I recently decided to go back and watch Superman Returns again.  Why did I do that?  1. I love comic book adaptations.  2. I wanted to see if it was deserving of the hate.  Spoiler Alert:  It's not.

It's a Bird, it's a Plane...

Superman Returns.  You all remember it, right? It's a sort of sequel that loosely follows after Superman: The Movie and Superman II but ignores Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace but at the same time, wanted to be a reboot before the reboot that was Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice.

Since the film failed to reboot the franchise, I prefer to think of it as a sequel to the originals.  It is with that mindset that the film works.

The movie got a lot of flack and I cannot really remember why.  Obviously, Brandon Routh is no Christopher Reeve.  (Psst, nobody is.)  That aside, it's a decent story with some great effects, good direction, and a solid performance from most of the cast.  Hello?  Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor?  Perfection.

The film also gives us some of the most iconic Superman movie images of all the movies.  The bullet to the eye after a chain-gun fires hundreds of rounds into his chest?  It was reminiscent of the Matrix.  Superman floating in space, listening to the voices of the world?  Iconic! That airplane rescue complete with the comedic line delivered perfectly by Routh?  Yes please!

The movie isn't the 1978 classic but it's definitely a good flick.  I encourage you to give it another try.  Go in with an open mind and a bucket of popcorn.  I promise, you'll have a good time!
